The District Bar Ludhiana has assumed with the passage of time the importance of an institution to be reckoned within the entire Northern Region as one of the most important body of advocates who have contributed greatly in the administration of the justice both at the Bench and the Bar.

It has an humble origin. There were only three courts, one at Ludhiana, the others at Ferozepur with its Headquarter at Ambala.

The courts of Ludhiana was established in at the fag end of 19th century.

The erstwhile Bakhshikhana was there and the surrounding area was used as Stable and a corner thereof near the old Courts Wood Bridge (now demolished) was housing a Army mess of the erstwhile rulers. By & by in 1922 Jagraon Bar came into being whereas Samrala Bar came into existence in the year 1935 consisting of around a dozen members of each Bar.

The District Bar Association, Ludhiana had less than 15 members in good old days. In 1964 the strength raised to 160 members. This great Bar had the distinction to produce the most eminent and illustrious galaxy of lawyers which got elevated and adorned the seats of Justice. To name a few are , Hon'ble Mr. Justice A.D. Kaushal, who went upto Supreme Court, Mr. Justice Sarabjit Singh Grewal , Mr. Justice S.S. Kang, Mr. Justice Vijay Jhanji remained as Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Mr. Justice K.S. Grewal and Mr. Jasbir Singh Dhaliwal remained as member Central Administrative Tribunal, Chandigarh.

Not only this, the District Bar Association members made their presence felt in political and other arenas. To name a few, it may be mentioned with advantage the names of Mr. Gurnam Singh, Chief Minister Punjab, Mr. Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal, Cabinet Minister, Punjab, Mr. Harnam Dass Johar, Cabinet Minister, Punjab, Mr. Mewa Singh Gill, Member Parliament, Mr. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Member Parliament and Mr.Harish Rai Dhanda, Parliamentary Secretary Punjab.

The presence of this August Body presently consists of more than 2800 members, which is biggest District Bar in Northern India after Delhi. The District Bar Association, Ludhiana has always endeavor to maintain the dignity, prestige, honor and high standard of legal ethics.
